More than three decades have passed since her days in the TV crime drama Dempsey and Makepeace but actress Glynis Barber appears to have barely aged a day.

And now the 60-year-old has revealed the secret to her youthful appearance - a bizarre treatment called micro-needling.

The process, reported to boost collagen levels by 1,000 per cent, involves tiny needles inserted into the face, which the actress insists 'isn't painful at all', in a bid to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and lessen pigmentation.

Miss Barber said she believes that at her age she needs more than make-up to keep her skin looking fresh.

'Make-up can cover a multitude of sins but it will never cover bad health or skin that's been neglected,' she said.

Several courses of the treatment are recommended but the age-defying actress said that after just one session she could still feel the 'glow' a week later.

The treatment works by creating 'micro trauma' on the skin, causing it to re-heal over scars, as well as opening up pores so other products can be absorbed into the skin.

During micro-needling hyaluronic acid is also injected into the skin, a substance which is found in fluids in the eyes and joints but extracted from rooster combs for medicinal use.

The actress said she underwent a 'masterlift' when she visited skin expert Marie Reynolds in London, which involves a facial cleanse and cranberry face mask prior to the micro-needling process, followed by an apple stem cell face mask, massaged into the skin using Himalayan salt balls. Each step of the treatment was specially tailored to Miss Barber's complexion.

She said: 'This really is bespoke work at its absolute best. It is literally the best treatment I've ever had.'

Other celebrities said to be fans of micro-needling include actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Naomi...
